Open Letter to FBU Executive Council
Trans Women deserve Equality
We the undersigned are dismayed at the debate taking place around the GRA and self ID.
We applaud the stance recently taken at the TUC conference where the vast majority of unions supported trans rights.
We do not believe that simply being trans makes someone more of a safeguarding risk.
No one should be excluded as a result of their gender ID.
Scaremongering is encouraging transphobia and prejudice and encouraging the thinking that women are being put at risk. The truth is that trans people are much more likely to be the recipients of violence, bullying and harassment.
Trans women go into women’s spaces because they ARE women.
As a trade union we are proud to have been at the forefront of breaking down barriers and confronting prejudice. We stand with trans men and women, just as we stood for women’s, black and ethnic minority , lesbian gay and bisexual rights throughout our careers.
We urge the FBU, our union to continue to lead in supporting progressive change for vulnerable minorities and to support the government proposals on Gender Recognition Act reform.
